In the Parable of the Great Banquet, Jesus tells of a master who prepares a lavish feast, only to be met with polite excuses from his invited guests. Distracted by land, labor, and domestic obligations, they chose the ordinary pursuits of life over communion with the Master. In response, the banquet doors are flung wide open to the margins—the poor, the broken, and the outsider. This passage challenges us to consider our own priorities: what good gifts are we allowing to crowd out the Giver? God’s grace is both an extravagant invitation to intimacy and an urgent call that demands a response. The table is prepared, and there is still room—will you take your seat?
